Mattie Godwin

Mattie Godwin, 72, of Memphis, TN, transitioned on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Baptist East Memorial Hospital, Memphis, TN.

Mrs. Mattie B. Godwin was born on June 7, 1952, to William Hunt and Mayola Perry-Hunt in Benton County, MS.  On Saturday, March 1, 2025, she transitioned at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Mattie accepted Christ at an early age at Samuel Chapel M.B. Church in Ashland, MS.  She graduated from Melrose High School.  She was a very loving mother who enjoyed cooking, listening to music, and dancing.

Mattie leaves to cherish her loving memories: three sons: Morris Smith of Memphis, TN, Chester Smith, Jr. (Denise) of Pullman, WA, and William Smith (Jennifer) of Jacksonville, FL; two daughters: Nikita Confer (Cortray Pearson) of Southaven, MS and Patrice Smith (Toney Polk) of Memphis, TN; two brothers: William Hunt, Jr. of Huntsville, AL and James Earl Hunt of Memphis, TN; thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren; special friends: Lorraine Evans of Memphis, TN and Clarence Kimbrough of Ashland, MS; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other family members, and friends.

Mattie was preceded in death by her parents: William Hunt and Mayola Perry-Hunt; three brothers: Roy Lee Cole, Lee Andrew Hunt, and Johnny B. Hunt; two sisters: Dorothy Mae Hampton and Bobbie Sue Hughes.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at New Beginning Church, 777 Stateline Road, Southaven, MS  38671.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at New Beginning Church, 777 Stateline Road, Southaven, MS  38671.

Burial will take place at Samuel Chapel M.B. Church Cemetery, 20561 MS Highway 5, Ashland, MS  38603.
