Mary Hicks Obituary

Mrs. Mary Louise Hicks, 77, transitioned on Friday, May 12, 2023, at Great Oaks Nursing Home, Byhalia, MS.

Mrs. Mary Louise Hicks was born on April 12, 1946,  in West Point, Mississippi, to the late Robert Lee Johnson and the late Rosie Lee Johnson. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Centreville, Illinois.She graduated from East High School, in East St. Louis, Illinois and later graduated from Mildred Louise Business College in East St. Louis, Illinois.

She moved to Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1988 and became a servant leader in the community.  She started the Lessye Lee Davis 4-H Club in 1997; as a 4-H Volunteer Leader with the Marshall County Extension Services Office,  she mentored and guided over 50 youth in the Marshall County area. She received the President’s Service Award in 2009, and after 15 years of service, retired in 2012.

She is also known for her work with the Holly Springs School District and was awarded the Parent of the Year Award by the Parent Teacher Association. Through her involvement with the school system, she spearheaded renovations and a parent reading program for the Holly Springs Intermediate School. Mary Hicks also served as parade director for the Holly Springs May Day Parade for 4 years and the Rust College Founder’s Day Parade before her retirement in 2011.

She leaves to cherish her memories,  son: Dwayne Hicks, daughter: Rosemary Hicks, stepson: Barry (Sonja) Johnson, granddaughter: Sherita Hicks; brothers: Tyree (Glennie) Johnson, Leonard (Joyce) Johnson,  Lovell Johnson, Jr., Danny Johnson; sister: Lovie Warren; eight Sister-in-laws, Lillian Brooks, Rubye Bailey, Addie Boga, Lavern H. (Alfred) Zinn, Charlene Moore,  Margaret H.  (Charles) McDonald, Katie H. (Billy) Autry, Ruthie H. (Elester) Gatewood, and one brother-in-law: Willie (Mary) Hicks and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Leroy Hicks, mother: Rosie Lee Johnson, father: Robert Lee Johnson, stepfather: Lovell Johnson, brother: Calvin Johnson, mother-in-law: Christine Hicks, father-in-law: Autry Hicks, brother-in-law: Lee Andrew Hicks and sister-in-law: Arlene Wicks.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:0 p.m., at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel, 140 N. Memphis St., Holly Springs, MS 38635.

Services will be Sunday, May 21,2023, 2:00 p.m., at the Eddie L. Smith Multi-Purpose Building, 235 N. Memphis St., Holly Springs, MS 38635.

Burial will follow at Hopewell No. 2 Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 249 Highway 313, Holly Springs, MS 38635.
