Josephine Wells Obituary

Mrs. Josephine Lynch Wells, 65, of Oxford, MS, transitioned on Monday, March 4, 2024, at Baptist Memorial Hospital

Our gospel giant, Mrs. Josephine Lynch Wells was born in Abbeville, Mississippi to Mrs. Hosley Mae Lynch Bratcher on September 20, 1958. Her father passed when she was very young. Josephine was the eldest of five children, the first daughter, and the most protective big sister to her siblings. She attended Lafayette County Schools, worked at Emerson Electric, and served as an apartment manager for Canterbury Crest for several years.

She was reared in the church, singing in the choir at St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. R.W. Fleming. She later  joined Clear Creek Baptist Church serving as a faithful member until God called her home on her wedding anniversary, March 4, 2024, at Oxford’s Baptist Memorial Hospital. The hospice caregivers and family decorated her room beautifully with butterflies, flowers, and signage to commemorate her 24th anniversary of marriage to her beloved husband and best friend, Mr. Wilbon Wells.

Josephine’s powerful and anointed voice captivated audiences across the region as the female lead gospel singer of the mighty Christian Crusaders for over 30 years. Blessed others with songs such as, “God Did It”, “Calling Me” “Precious” “ Walk around  Heaven” “Precious Lord”….When she belted out songs with her powerful voice, people would shout, faint, praise, and worship. She continued to worship through health challenges while demonstrating courage to fight until God said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

She became a young mother to Searn Lynch and later in life married Wilbon, the love of her life, and enjoyed a blended family life together vacationing and shopping for antiques. She loved beautiful things, filling her home with rare, unique décor. She also enjoyed hosting family for holiday celebrations and preparing a feast for all to enjoy.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Wilbon  Andrew Wells Jr. Sons Searn Lynch of Oxford,  and Randy Farmer of Memphis; daughters Shelbi Wells and Fanta Wells; mother Mrs. Hosely Mae Bratcher; special Uncle Rev. Wall Doxey Lynch; sisters Dr. Hazel James Cole (Atlanta, GA) and Cecelia James (Johnnie) Webb, and brothers Osie James, Jr. (Memphis, TN), Stacy Smith and Tracy Smith (Detroit, MI); seven grandchildren, Dazzarick Gipson, Gabriel Gipson, Searn Lynch Jr., Karmin Lynch, A’Shaunti Thomas, Eva Wells, and Iman Wells; three great grandchildren Dazz Gipson Jr., Jamel Burrell-Karriem, Melanin Burrell-Karriem; sister-in-law Bernice Wells and brothers-in law Harry and Robert Wells; special aunts Callie Smith (St. Louis, MO), Martha Moten (Chicago, IL), May Rosie Cooper (Byhalia, MS), and Florence Arps Lynch; special cousins Charlotte Pearson and Marsha Bond; nieces and nephews Kimberly Souder (Atlanta, GA), Sterling (Destiny) Cole (Hattiesburg, MS), Jonathan (Chelsea) Webb (Cleveland, MS), Stevie James Jr, of Holly Springs, Harry T.
