Mrs. Jessie Lee Herron, 78, transitioned on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at her residence in Oxford, MS.
Jessie Lee Herron was born on May 28, 1944 to the late Jessie and Ruthie Jane Herron in Oxford, MS; the 4th of 9 children. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined South Salem MB Church. Jessie attended Taylor school. In 1962 Jessie had her first and only son Bobby. In 1964 Jessie and Bobby moved to Indianapolis, IN. While there she gained employment at MCL cafeteria. Her daughter Dana was born in 1975 while in Indianapolis. After 17 years in Indiana, she would move back home. Once she returned home she gained employment at Camp Hopewell along with her aunt Ruthie Mae Majors Store, and in 1987 at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house on the Ole Miss campus. She worked there for 12 years until her retirement in 1999. After retiring she helped her Sister Dorothy in her Daycare business. She opened her own Day care.
Once Jessie returned home she was one of the founding members on New Salem MB Church, the rebirth of South Salem. She served her church diligently while serving in the capacities of kitchen committee president, usher, choir member, mother board, finance committee, tape ministry, and church decorator. She served until her health began to decline. After a short illness her son Bobby whispered “mama come on home with me” she did just that on May 6th at her home.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter Dana Herron of Oxford, MS, special niece who she helped raise Patricia Luster, grandchildren; Torrey (Kristy) Herron, Cilitha and Ashley Herron both of Tea’aira and Daymeon Pegues, Alecia, Jayden, and Thomas “AJ” Wells, 9 great grand children. Sisters Dorothy Luster and Edna (Robert) Henderson and Ruby Brown ,Brothers; Thomas and Johnnie Herron and Eddie Herron She also leaves two best friends Martha Alvis and Hazel Pryor Special accountant and friend Kena Dunn .
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Bobby Herron, brothers Isaiah “Bill” and Allen “Pete” Herron. Best friends Doris Mitchell, Swaydie Pettis, special aunt Ruthie Mae “Big Mama” Stokes and her New Salem MB Church family.
Visitation for will be held on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel, 294 Highway 7 North, Oxford, MS 38655.
Service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at Second Baptist Church, 611 E. Jackson Ave, Oxford, MS 38655.
Burial will take place at Oxford Memorial Cemetery, Oxford, MS.
