Mrs. Dorothy Jean Valentine was born on September 21, 1945, to the late Johnnie B. Hudson, Sr. and Emma Lue Poplar Joy in Saulsbury, TN. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, she transitioned at her residence in Michigan City, MS.
Dorothy was employed as a custodian at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, IN. She enjoyed dancing, shopping, playing cards, and being around her grandchildren.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: three sons: Devone Poplar of Michigan City, MS, Mark Leon Poplar (Felica) of Louisville, KY, and Tony Valentine (Ronda) of Indianapolis, IN; three daughters: Lisa Poplar of Michigan City, MS, Nita L. Valentine, and Lacheryl Dilworth (Jody) both of Memphis, TN; four brothers: David Hudson (Elaine) of Grand Junction, TN, George Joy, William Joy (Iva), and Terry Joy all of Michigan City, MS; six sisters: Linda Hunt of Ashland, MS, Mary Davis (Arthur) of Grand Junction, TN, Johnnie Ann Joy of Michigan City, MS, Annie B. Pugh, Alberta Hudson both of Chicago, IL, and Virlene Tate (Charles) of Millington, TN; twenty one grandchildren; sixty three great grandchildren; one aunt: Earlene Joy of Bolivar, TN, two uncles: Leroy Richardson and Willie C. Gordan both of Indianapolis, IN; three Valentine Sisters-in-law; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other family members, and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents: Johnnie B. Hudson, Sr. and Emma Lue Poplar Joy; husband: Chess Valentine; four brothers: Johnnie B. Hudson, Jr., Otis Salton, Robert Poplar, and Hugh Ellis Tate.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel, 140 N. Memphis St., Holly Springs, MS 38635.
Body will lie in state one hour before service time.
