Obituary

Bernice Rose Bailey, 85, transitioned on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS.

Bernice Rose Mallory Bailey died unexpectedly by car accident on October 24, 2021. Bernice was born to John Henry and Ada Coleman Mallory on December 12, 1935, in Chicago IL.  The youngest of 10 siblings, Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Ada, all her siblings (Minnie Lee Mallory King, Onzie Mallory, Mary Jane Mallory Jordan, Gerald Mallory, Esther Mae Mallory, Clarence Mallory, Willa Mae Mallory Morgan, and Frank Grimes Mallory), her former husband and close friend, Willie Bailey, her niece (Mary Elois King) and two nephews (Robert Cunningham and Lemont Burnett).

She loved her community and her church.  A 51-year resident of New Albany, MS, she championed education and community engagement.  She became an elementary school teacher after moving to New Albany and served several terms on the New Albany school board in numerous roles, including board president. She was a poll worker and a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association, Mississippi Homemakers Volunteers, and Gerizim Cemetery committee.  Bernice united with Watson Grove Baptist Church when she moved to New Albany and remained a faithful member throughout her life.  She has served as Sunday School superintendent and church treasurer and was a Sunday School teacher until her death.

She was a loving and devoted aunt; she remembered birthdays and special events of each of her nieces and nephews.  Mourning her passing are Bernice’s nieces and nephews: Esther Mallory, Glenn Mallory (Gloria), Anthony Willis (Easterlyn), Amerilis Mallory Ersery, Debra Mallory Boxton, Jamika Mallory, Ricardo Mallory (Sandra), Teresa Mallory O’Leary (Timothy), and Sharon Burnett Wright (Ken); two special friends, Varnell Kimmons and Camilla Kennedy; and a host of great-niece, great-nephews, cousins.

Bernice was deeply loved and will be greatly missed!
