Cecil H. Gunter was born in Temple Hill, South Carolina on August 20, 1943. He departed this
life November 2, 2019. Cecil was the sixth child of Hugh Lambert Gunter, Sr. And Edna Toby
Gunter.
Through his parent’s belief, train up a child in the way he should go, and he may stray but will
not depart, Cecil accepted Christ and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church of Florence, SC. Over the
years he worshiped with several churches. After retiring and relocating to Mississippi, he joined
the Red Hill M.B. Church in Blue Springs, MS.
Cecil was a 1960 graduate of Wilson High School in Florence, SC. Next, he matriculated at
Morgan State University of Baltimore, MD, University of Pittsburgh and the University of
Miami, FL.
Cecil retried after 30 years of working in the medical field as an organ transport professional,
specializing in kidney transports. His career opportunities include: John Hopkins University,
Baltimore, MD, the University of Pittsburgh, University of Miami (Northwest Kidney Center),
Downstate Medical Center Sunny Bronx, NY and the University of Washington (Kidney Center)
Belview, WA.
Cecil was a past member of the Masonic Lodge #43, Seattle, WA. He was active in the Civil
Rights Movement and a member of the NAACP. He was instrumental in desegregating the Kress
Department Store Lunch counter in Florence, SC. He has been honored in the Florence Museum.
His father, mother, one son and five brothers preceded him in death.
Cecil, we will carry you in our hearts; loving and devoted wife, Hazel Gunter of Blue Springs,
MS, two daughters: Karen Gunter of PA and Ginna Douglas Morehouse of MS, one son: Toby
Gunter of TX, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters: Lois James and Essie
Gross both of MD, one brother: Hugh Lambert Gunter, Jr. (Barbara) of Warrenville, OH, seven
sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, one son-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends.
